In Aden in southern Yemen, violence escalates, polling stations are destroyed, and there are deaths and injuries. After 33  years of Ali Abdullah Saleh’s dictatorship, Yemenis can go to the polls, but they can only vote for or against Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi. Opponents of the election are calling for a boycott of the presidential election throughout Yemen. Yemen is politically divided; the Islamist terrorist organization Al-Qaeda is trying to gain influence in the south.
